Ulysses Grant

He was born in 1822 and was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point
against his wiill and graduated in the middle of his class. He fought in the Mexican War
under General Zachary Taylor. In September 1861 he was at the rank of of brigadier general
of volunteers. In February 1862 he took Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Soon after that
Lincoln promoted him to major general of volunteers. He died in 1885.

Robert E. Lee

He was born on January 19,1807 and was the general of the confederate forces
during the American Civil War.In early 1861 Lee oposed the sucession of his native state
Virginia, but rejected Lincoln's offer to command the United States forces. Lee instead
decided to follow his home state. His greatest victories were were the Seven Days Battle,
the Second Battle of Bull Run the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Chancellorsville.
In July 1863 Lee was defeatd at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died on October 12,1870.

Jefferson Davis

He was born on June 3,1808. He was an American politician who served as
president of the Confederate States on America. After he was captured in 1865 he was held
in a federal prison for 2 years, then released as the treason charges against him were
dropped.

Abraham Lincoln


He was born on Feb.12,1809 in Kentucky. He made efforts to learn while still
working at his farm, splitting rails, and running a store in Salem. He was elected president
in 1860 and was president through out the civil war. On good Friday, April 14,1864 Lincoln
was assassinated at the Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, who thought by
doing this he was helping the South. But he was wrong, with the death of Lincoln also came the
end of any possibilities of peace between the two regions.

Frederick Douglass

He was born on February 20,1818. He was one of the most prominent figures
of African American history during his time, and one of the most influential lecturers and
authors in American history. As a former slave he was a firm believer in the in the equality
of all people, whether black, female, American Indian, or recent immigrant. He spent his whole
life advocating the brotherhood of all humankind.
