Cisneros’s home life as a child

      =   Born= on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to a Mexican father and a Chicana mother, Sandra Cisneros was a shy, sensitive child who "retreated insi= de herself," especially when her six brothers ignored her. Her family was poor and moved frequently, "always in neighborhoods that appeared like France after World War II—empty lots and burned out buildings," according to Cisneros. But no matter where they lived, her parents stressed= the importance of education and taking advantage of the local library.

 

 

Cisneros’s experiences at school

      =   After graduating from Chicago's Loyola University (B.A., 1976), Cisneros attended the University of Iowa Writers' Wo= rkshop (M.F.A., 1978). There she developed what was to be the theme of most of her writing, her unique experiences as a Hispanic woman in a largely alien cult= ure.

 

 

Cisneros’s work experience

Cisneros received her M.F.A from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1978. Th= is workshop marks an important turning point in her career as a writer. Cisner= os had periodically written poems and stories while growing up, but it was the frustrations she encountered at the Writer's Workshop that inspired Cisnero= s' realization that her experiences as a Latina woman were unique and outside the realm of dominant American culture. Thus, Cisneros decided to write about conflicts directly related to her upbringin= g, including divided cultural loyalties, feelings of alienation, and degradati= on associated with poverty. These specific cultural and social concerns, coupl= ed with Cisneros' feelings of alienation as a Latina writer, came to life five years = later in The House on Mango Street (1983). =

 

 

Cisneros’s career as a writer<= /span>

      =   Cisn= eros became the first Chicana to receive a major book contract from a mainstream publisher when Random House published Woman Hollering Creek in 1991. A compelling collection of short stories about the Chicana experience in the borderlands of Texas, it was widely distributed and lauded by critics as a "choral work in w= hich the harmonic voices emphasize the commonality of experience."
