RESEACHING A PERSON:  Martin luther king,

What was the person’s background?

Martin Luther King, Jr., is credited with being the major force behind the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s that brought about the dismantling of legal segregation in the United States.

How and why did the person become involved in the Civil Rights Movement?

 For King, Taking on oppression in society was not a political issue but a moral one. "It has always been the responsibility of the church to broaden horizons, challenge the status quo and the mores when necessary," he declared.

What did the person contribute to the Civil Rights Movement?

In the bus boycott, King found a chance to employ Gandhian tactics alongside the Christian message of love and forgiveness. Under King’s leadership, Montgomery blacks established a car pool system of 300 vehicles as alternate transportation, formed a communications structure, and raised money to support the boycott.

How did the other people respond to the person then?

The white community retaliated with violence.
