Week 1 - Day 4

Robotics Lesson Plan

Construction Basics:  Outputs

Objectives:

  • Students will create an RCX car that will demonstrate the use of motors to turn wheels and gears

  • Students will apply robotics knowledge to assigned tasks

Materials:

  • RCX

  • Wire Connectors

  • 2 motors

  • Lego Kits

  • Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.8

  • Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.9

Activity 1:  Outputs

Approx:  45 minutes

The RCX has three outputs labeled A, B, and C.  Using wires, we can connect motors and lights to these outputs and integrate them into building design.

1.      Students will use Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.8 to complete the task.

2.      Questions for students:

a.       How would you add a motor into a series of gears? What Lego's from your kit would you use?

b.      How would you mount a motor to the RCX?

c.       If you were building a car, how many motors would you need?

d.      If you wanted twice as much power and would therefore need two motors, how would you construct the gearing to do so?

Activity 2: Build a RCX Car

Approx:  45 Minutes

1.      Students will examine the RCX and identify features that will help them construct a car.

2.      The RCX should be the central point of the vehicle.

3.      Students need to decide on the design of the car, students should use Day 2 and Day 3 construction procedures to assist them in designing the car.

4.      Provide Students with Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.8

5.      Complete the creation of an RCX car.
