Robotics Lesson Plan

Construction Basics Continued

 

Objectives:

  • Students will gain understanding of gears and wheels

  • Students will learn to build moveable structures

  • Students will gain understanding of forces that provide movement.

 

Materials:

  • Lego kits

  • Lego Name Book

  • Lego Parts Guide

  • Activity 1.6 Student Handout

  • Activity 1.7 Student Handout

 

Teacher Instructions:

Vocabulary: Torque, Speed, Driver, Follower

 

TORQUE:  A turning or twisting force

SPEED:  How fast something moves

DRIVER:  Gear turning another gear

FOLLOWER:  Gear being turned 

 

Teachers need to address the vocabulary definitions listed above and have students develop a classroom understanding of the words, this can be done with a word wall, vocabulary sheet, etc (teacher choice).   Students will be provided with worksheets to complete Activities 1 and 2.  Teachers should utilize discussion questions after each activity to gauge learning and understanding.

 

Activity 1: GEARS

Approx:  45 minutes

 

            Procedure:

1.      Review vocabulary words with students.

2.      Briefly explain the activities

3.      Divide students into established Robotics teams

4.      Provide each team with the Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.6

5.      Student should complete each procedure.

6.      Provide time limits for each procedure.

a.       Procedure 1:  5 minutes

b.      Procedure 2:  10 minutes

c.       Procedure 3:  10 minutes

d.      Procedure 4:  10 minutes

e.       Procedure 5:  10 minutes

7.      Keep a timer on each group

8.      After each procedure have the students answer the follow up questions.

9.      Teachers should lead the student discussion about findings in working with gears.

 

Activity 2:  Wheels

Approx:  50 minutes

 

            Procedure:

1.      Provide each team with the procedure Student Activity Instruction Sheet 1.7

2.      Provide time limits for each procedure

a.       Procedure 1:  5 minutes

b.      Procedure 2:  10 minutes

c.       Procedure 3:  10 minutes

d.      Procedure 4:  10 minutes

e.       Procedure 5:  15 minutes

3.      After each procedure have the students answer the follow up questions

4.      Teachers should lead the student discussion about finding in working with wheels.
