Research and Build
Student Activity Instruction
Sheet 3.2
In this activity, the robotics teams will be responsible for designing a robotics course that contains similar terrain to an actual planet in the solar system. The teams will use materials provided in the classroom to create a model of the ground surface of a planet assigned to them by the teacher.
To research the planet, utilize the online library resources:
- Worldbook Online (http://www.worldbookonline.com)
- Encyclopedia

- NewBank (http://dkc.esc20.net/dkclibraries.htm)

Procedure:
1. Using the planet assigned to the team, research the planet's surface.
a. What type of soil is found on the planet?
b. Is the planet's surface smooth or rough?
c. Do bodies of water exist on the planet's surface?
d. What is the temperature on the planet?
e. Are there hills, craters, or valleys on the planet?
f. Is the surface hard or compact or is the surface sandy or muddy?
2. After researching the assigned planet for the team, begin creating the model of the ground surface.
3. This model will be used as a testing course for the rover you will build in the next activity.
4. Utilize classroom materials to build terrain of your planet.
