ITLS Workshop
Policies and Procedures

Attendance

Since we value your attendance at professional development sessions, please know that beginning in June, 2004, all attendance will be shared with your immediate supervisor. We want to ensure that not only will you get a certificate to show evidence of attendance, but also that your supervisor will know what workshops you have attended. They can also check attendance online.

Before driving out to a campus site, you are encouraged to VERIFY CLASS REGISTRATION. This will allow you to see if the workshop has been cancelled. Also note that our procedure in the event of a workshop cancellation is to do the following:

  • Place a phone call to your work and home.
  • Send an email to your work address advising you that the class has been cancelled.
  • Failure to sign in to a workshop will result in no credit for the session.
  • If a participant has not signed in, they must get their principal to vouch for them in writing. ITLS will issue a certificate once our office has received the fax from the principal.

General Reminders
  Please be aware that participants may not bring others (friends,relatives) inside the classroom setting; seats are reserved for registered participants only. Children should also not be left unattended while participants attend a workshop. This policy takes effect June 1, 2004.

Policy for Paraprofessionals
  Instructional Technology is now welcoming paraprofessional staff to attend training. Important points to keep in mind:

  1. Paraprofessionals will need to attend on your own time
  2. No payment will be made by ITLS for any workshops that you attend on your own time.
  3. If your campus principal mandates that you should attend training, payment must come from the principal/campus and is between you and your campus principal.

Course Cancellation and Minimum Enrollment
  Instructional Technology Services adheres to the policy that every workshop session must have a minimum of 5 participants. If, on the day of the workshop, four or less participants are present, the class will be cancelled.

All workshop materials, however, will be made available to the participants. Copies of all workshop session materials are made available via the ITLS web site at http://itls.saisd.net/tli
.

SAISD - A Registered CPE Provider

Since San Antonio ISD is a registered provider of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours, educators who have a standard certificate issued by SBEC can earn their required clock hours. It is for this reason that you will now find our CPE Provider # appearing on all certificates issued by the Offices of Instructional Technology Services and Library Media Services.

How do I renew my standard certificate?
The Standard Certificate replaced the lifetime Provisional and Professional Certificates. SBEC began issuing the Standard Certificate on September 1, 1999. Educators with a Standard Certificate have to renew their certificates five years after the last day of the certificate holder's next birth month. Educators who need to renew their Standard Certificate must complete the required number of clock hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE), as well as complete a few other requirements *(detailed at the web address below).

What are the required number of CPE hours?
The CPE requirements for each class of certificate are as follows:
• classroom teachers must complete 150 clock hours every five years;
• counselors must complete 200 clock hours every five years;
• learning resource specialists and school librarians must complete 200 clock hours every five years;
• reading specialists must complete 200 clock hours every five years;
• educational diagnosticians must complete 200 clock hours every five years;
• master teachers must complete 200 clock hours every five years; and
• superintendents, principals, and assistant principals must complete 200 clock hours every five years.

Candidates currently assigned as a principal or assistant principal are required by law (Texas Education Code, section 21.054) to complete an assessment process designed to assist in the development of a professional growth plan (see 19 TAC Chapter 241.30 for more information). Professional development credit earned as a part of the professional growth plan can also be used to fulfill requirements for
renewal of the principal certificate.

What activities count toward the CPE clock hours every five years?
To allow maximum flexibility for educators to identify appropriate CPE activities to meet their individual needs, CPE clock hours can be accrued in a variety of ways*. Note that Instructional Technology and Library Media Services can best help you in the following two ways:
1. Workshops, conferences, and in-service or staff development delivered by an approved registered provider;
2. And development of curriculum or CPE training materials.

We hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities to earn CPE Clock Hours through the Offices of Instructional Technology and Library Media Services.
