Morning (Palm Familiarization) Training Outline
The lead trainer for the morning sessions of the Palm/TPRI training for K-2 teachers will be a Instructional Technology Department staff member.
Distribute Palm and paperwork
SAISD Procedure: Inventory and Distribution of Handheld Computer (1 per participant)
SAISD Handheld Computer Agreement (2 per participant)
Go over both forms - Participants fill out one SAISD Handheld Computer Agreement and return to IT Trainer, keep one for themselves.
Emphasize
Palm belongs to school not the individual.
Other uses including student use will be developed.
May use for personal data (i.e. calendar) but the handheld may be needed for other programs and data integrity cannot be guaranteed. At the current time, only mCLASS: TPRI is supported by the district. Using the calendar, contacts, etc… is strictly up to the individual.
No email – downloading email can fill the handheld’s memory
Training Follows Palm Handheld Trainers Notes as provided. Please add/emphasize the following information at the appropriate page.
Page 4 - Charging
Palm batteries are built for quick charge, long life when in use, but not long-term storage. Palms hold a charge for about 30 days when not in use.
Get into the habit of charging them every few days.
Cradle does NOT have to be plugged into the computer, plug into electrical outlet and use as just a charger.
It is not possible to over charge the Palm.
If the Palm becomes completely discharged, data on the Palm is gone. Data “synced” to computers still exists on that computer (can be “synced” back to Palm”)
Page 4 - “Syncing”
“Syncing” sends data from your Palm to your computer (and/or a server) AND sends data from your computer (and/or a server) to your Palm thus synchronizing the two devices.
Each application syncs when you press the sync button.
For SAISD’s implementation of TPRI, we will have several stations designated to “sync” TPRI data.
If you choose to use the PalmDesktop on a computer you will need to also “sync” to that computer.
Note: Reading will also emphasize the following syncing information as it pertains to mCLASS: TPRI
When you sync on one of the TPRI sync station three things happen:
1.
Newest version of TPRI is downloaded to the Palm if needed.
2.
Current student roster is downloaded to the Palm.
3.
Test data is uploaded to the mCLASS server.
Page 6 – Home
There is no exit or close window on Palm applications. The Home button lets you exit from an application.
Page 7 - Hard Buttons
When giving the test, it will be easier to use the hard scrolling buttons to change pages.
Page 8 - Graffiti
There have been some concerns that teachers (particularly those that teach handwriting) might have difficulty learning Graffiti.
Graffiti is NOT used by mCLASS: TPRI or mCLASS: Reading
Graffiti is useful but does take some practice. Data can be entered using the soft keyboard.
Show how to use soft keyboard.
Page 11 - Using the Palm
This the first point where participants actually use the Palm. Quite often many participants have already tried to use their Palm. At this point, try to bring the group back together to emphasize these two important points:
Tapping
Digitizing
Turning On/Off – Power Buttons, Hard Buttons
Splash Screen
When turned on splash screen appears - Disappears after 5 seconds or tap
When turned off splash screen appears - Disappears after 5 seconds
Turns itself off - when turned back on returns right back (splash screen first for five seconds or tap.)
No Page but appropriate here -
Changing Brightness – press and hold the power button
Turning Off Sound – Drop Down Soft Button / Preferences / General / Sound On-Off
Page 12 - Setting Date
Since all of the mClass (and many others) products automatically date and time stamp entries, it is VERY important these are set properly.
Check often.
Change User Name on Palm so that it is unique.
This step is critical to ensure one user’s data does not overwrite another user’s data when syncing on the public sync stations. Failure to have a unique user name may cause the user to loose personal data (calendar appointments, contacts, notes, etc) but will not effect TPRI data. (mCLASS: TPRI uses the user id and password inside the mCLASS: TPRI program)
Steps:
On the computer – launch Palm Desktop
User Menu (top right of window) – choose Edit Users:
From that window – select the user (SAISD) click Rename
Enter the new name (first and last name, should be unique) click OK
Click OK
Close Palm Desktop
Connect cradle to computer.
Put Palm in cradle – sync
While the sync is in progress, the new user’s name should appear in the window on the computer.
Setting the User Name and Password for TPRI practice: (this must be done before your first sync)
When viewing all of the Palm icons (Menu), choose the WGSync Icon. You will be prompted to enter
A User Name (given by ITLS like saisd009). Underneath you will see Password: --Prompt—
Click on the --prompt—and enter the password which is 1234 for all demo accounts. Then click save.
Afternoon (mCLASS: TPRI) Training Outline
