Email Sent to K-2 Teachers Regarding TPRI Handheld Initiative

This email was sent on May 29, 2003 to all K-2 teachers in San Antonio ISD

Hi! My name is Miguel Guhlin and I'm SAISD's Director of Instructional Technology Services (527-1400; mguhlin@saisd.net). I hope to share some information with you that will facilitate, and perhaps clarify for some, registration for the TPRI Handheld classes taking place August 4-8th. You may want to print this email out for future reference as well as chat with your Campus Technology Representative (CTR).

The purpose of this email is to make you aware that staff development is available to you. More information is available online at the TPRI Handheld Initiative Support page at http://itls.saisd.net/tpri

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This message is intended for K-2 teachers administering TPRI, not "Tejas Lee." I apologize if you are a bilingual K-2 teacher that has received this in error.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
As you may have heard, the San Antonio ISD has made a decision to administer the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) using Palm handheld computers. Over 800 grades K-2 teachers will receive a Palm handheld computers in August as part of the District's effort to ease administration of the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI), monitor and adjust in a shorter time period, and move to a paperless, automated environment. A company--Wireless Generation--has partnered with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and regional Education Service Centers around the state to facilitate the administration, scoring and reporting process for the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI). Professional development will be available to Grades K-2 teachers this summer, August 4-8th. Training will be provided by combined teams from Instructional Technology Services, Campus Instructional Technologists, and Reading Office staff. It will be critical you register for staff development. In return for attending, you will receive a Palm handheld computer and a teacher-choice day for use during the school year. The training will be six hours long, 3 hours focused on handheld familiarization and 3 hours on administering the TPRI using the Palm. Lunch will be on your own.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR TRAINING?
To sign up for staff development, follow this simple 3-step process. Failure to complete the first step will result in your registration being discarded; several have already been discarded. That is why it is important that you also VERIFY any workshop registrations that you have completed to ensure that you have been registered successfully. Even if you have a confirmation page, if it does not have your name on it, you should check your registration. Also, verifying will allow you to see WHERE and WHEN the training will take place.

3 STEP PROCESS FOR TRAINING REGISTRATION
The 3 step process is outlined and available online at http://itls.saisd.net/pd

You are encouraged to follow the process online.

STEP ONE: Get an account: This involves you entering your name, email and 4 digit code. Once you have received confirmation of an account, you can proceed to STEP TWO

STEP TWO: Register from the classes available in the grid of classes available online at http://itls.saisd.net/pd
From this grid you can check to see what classes are still available--they're filling up fast--and register for them. Do not sign up for classes with 20 enrolled students since those classes are full and you will be relocated to a class that is not full.

STEP THREE: Verify your class registration to make sure you are signed up. This final step allows you to verify that you did indeed register successfully for a class. It also allows you to print out a list of classes you are registered for this summer, which includes dates, times and locations.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email at the end of the year. I encourage you to share the information with other K-2 teachers at your campus, as well as discuss it with other K-2 teachers in the district. It is important that as many K-2 teachers as possible hear about this training opportunity and register during August 4-8th.

A flyer that was shared with your principal on May 21st is also available at http://itls.saisd.net/tpri

Should any questions arise, please feel free to contact me directly. If I am not available, you may speak to Claude Ascolese at 527-1400 or via email at "cascolese@saisd.net"
