SUBJECT: |
Identification of SyncStations for the TPRI Handheld Initiative |
|
DATE |
July 28, 2003 |
San Antonio ISD will begin placement of docking cradles to each campus for the Palm m515 handheld computers. These cradles—which are in addition to the one each teacher will receive with their Palm handheld computer--facilitate the transfer of student data from the handheld computer to the official Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) web site.
These extra cradles will be matched to a computer meeting appropriate specifications. The cradle and the computer are known as a “SyncStation.” SAISD technical staff will be responsible for deploying the SyncStation cradles and setting them up with the identified computers at the campus.
To assist with the deployment, each campus needs to identify the computers that will be used as “SyncStations.” The number of cradles a campus will receive is determined by the current K-2 teacher allocation so as to achieve a 4:1 teacher:SyncStation ratio. This information is outlined in the attachment to this memo, SyncStation Allocations for the TPRI Handheld Initiative.
The computers used as sync stations for this initiative can either be Intel-based or Macintosh. The computers that you will identify must meet the following criteria:
1. Be easily accessible by teachers at various times during the day.
2. Be purchased within the last three years.
3. Be currently connected to the District’s wide area network.
4. Have access to the Internet.
Please use the attached Project Information Sheet to identify which computers at your campus will be used as sync stations. This form must be returned to my office no later than:
Tuesday, August 12, 2003.
Also, as part of the Project Information Sheet we are asking for two (2) points of contact for your campus. These staff members will assist the SAISD technician assigned to your campus. They will be given a demonstration of how the SyncStation is set up and answer any questions about how this product works with other members of your faculty. We recommend the point of contact be the CIC and the CTR. However, the choice is yours.
Deployment and setup of the Palm cradles with the identified sync stations will begin on Thursday, August 14, 2003. Campuses are currently scheduled as follows:
