Selection Process

The following data will be used to select the cohorts for Phase 1, Phase II, and Phase III implementation.

 

Campus Requirements:

Facility

 

Our campus has completed and is implementing the GATS program.

 

We will provide the 2003-2004 Math and Science TAKS scores.

 

Our campus has a secure classroom available that will be used for storing 20 computers and for conducting the Dell TechKnow After-School Program.

 

The identified room supports voltage and outlet requirements as per Plant Services assessment.

 

Our campus will provide power strips, if needed.

 

The identified room is wired for internet connectivity.

 

The classroom will be equipped with tables to setup 20 computers and chairs for each student.

 

The identified room will be maintained by the custodian on a daily basis.

Teacher/Instructor

 

Our campus has a teacher designated to teach the after-school Dell TechKnow Curriculum.

 

The designated teacher agrees to teach the 40-hour Dell TechKnow Curriculum.

 

The designated teacher agrees to implement student standards and contracts for citizenship (satisfactory or better), attendance (NO unexcused absences-Missed class MUST be made up), and grades (passing ALL classes).

 

ITLS will provide the designated teacher a stipend for the 40 hour course plus preparation.

 

The Teacher will attend 6 hour training conducted by Dell staff at SSNB on  Saturday February 26, 2005.

 

ITLS will pay the teacher $18.50 per hour to attend the 6 hour Saturday training.

 

The designated teacher will create the after-hours schedule for the 40-hour Dell TechKnow program.

 

The designated teacher and ITLS staff will setup the computers when they arrive to insure that they are in working order.

 

The designated teacher will receive a progress report for each student on a weekly basis.

Student Criteria – We understand that:

 

8th grade students will complete a campus application that will be used to select 20 students.

 

The 20 students selected will be comprised of 10 boys and 10 girls.

 

The 20 students participating in the TechKnow program MUST meet certain requirements in order to earn their FREE computer.

 

The students will receive 40 hours of instruction after school from the designated campus teacher.

 

The students must maintain regular attendance at school.  A Student cannot have any unexcused absences. (Unexcused absences will result in an incomplete in the program and therefore the student does NOT receive a system.)

 

Missed TechKnow classes must be made up or student does not graduate from the program or receive a computer.

 

Students must maintain at least a C (75) average or show definite grade improvement.

 

Students must maintain strong citizenship with NO suspensions or discipline issues to remain in the Program.

 

The 20 students selected are on free or reduced lunch and at risk.

 

The 20 students selected DO NOT have a home computer

 

The Dell TechKnow Program allows for one computer per household.

Parent Outreach – We understand that Parent support is critical to the success of the program.  We agree to:

 

Conduct a mandatory student/parent meeting to explain the program. Designated teacher, Principal, and an ITLS staff member will attend this mandatory meeting.

 

Acquire parent and student signatures on the Parent Consent form.

 

Acquire student signatures on the Student Contracts.

 

Acquire signatures on the Internet Policy form.

 

Acquire signatures on the Dell TechKnow Photo Consent Form.

Additional Requirements: To insure the success and safety of the program, we agree to:

 

Provide static wrist bands for each student and teacher participating in the program.

 

Provide computer toolkits for student use during the program.

 

Provide copies of the Dell TechKnow After-School Curriculum to each student.

 

Complete and submit the required reports to Dell on a timely basis.

 

Recruit a parent or High School volunteer to help the designated teacher.

 

Hold a graduation or similar recognition event for students and volunteers.

 

Communicate to parents, teachers, students and administrators about the Program, its goals and success.
